You’re probably a little fuzzy about what exactly Affirmations are, right? Here’s another question… Can you remember “Daily Affirmation With Stuart Smalley” on Saturday Night Live played by ? His whole spiel was saying, “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.”
Well, Stuart was saying one of his affirmations, most likely for his low self-esteem issues. Or maybe it was for his lack of luster in the relationship arena? Or, it could have been that like most of us, we’re all human, afterall, he’s trying to give himself a ‘Pep Talk’ – and whynot, he deserves it!
Just Like You do, too!
Affirmations are statements, positive in feeling and never doubtful of their promises.
Using Stuart’s statement “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.”, let’s look at what there is about it, to make him/you feel better, to inspire promise?
First off, it’s the use of the pronoun, ‘I’m’. Stuart is taking ownership in the Now! That’s empowering! It lifts your chin, puffs out your chest, and tells your brain that this is a good thing.
Had he said, “I’m a little slow, I’m a lot stoopid” his next declaration
may have been, “and doggone it, I’ll understand if you say no to me!”
Let’s try a little exercise to put you in the frame-of-mind to set fully working affirmations for yourself. I’d like you to fill-in-the-blanks.
- The day is just beginning, and already it is __________.
- I feel __________ when __________ is __________.
- As the fog lifts, I begin to forget what __________ is like,
for I have replaced (it) with __________.
To give your affirmation more ummfth,you can put this in an affirmation journal, or add a soothing background to it for visual interest. Here’s my affirmation using the above exercise:
Great, now you’ve written your first affirmation!
But what is this going to do for you? You are going to look at it, as much as you can, as often as you begin to feel blue, Every Day! Hang it on your bathroom mirror, and another on the steering wheel of your car… or your pocket, this way when you begin to feel stressed, out-of-control and in the dumps about not getting something finished – Just rub your pocket and know that this speaks the truth.
Affirmations, are never doubtful of their promises.
The more you are mindful of these affirmations, the more you will start to act a little more like that vibrant, productive, impassioned person that you know you are! The more you truly pay attention to your actions and what you say, the more you will realize that this is working. Affirmations are not a bad type of brainwashing, but a tool to Put Into Your Mind, all that you wish to become and to CHANGE that nasty habit of self-doubt, and all it’s ugly cousins!
